Last week I received a phone call to let me know my Nan was in heart failure. She had been a little unwell for a while, and had had a few little ‘turns’, however at 82, Nan was in remarkable health. The phone call was received with a mad rush to pick up my two kids and race them the 2 hour drive to be by her bedside. A difficult family situation means that I don’t get to see my Nan very often, and in fact, this was the first time I had seen her in the last 6 months. My goodness it was a shock to see her, lying in her bed, looking every one of her 82 years, her first comment as we walked in her door, was that she had had enough, she didn’t want to be here anymore.
My children and I spent the next hour and a half, sharing stories, smiling, laughing, touching and begin with our Nan, and by the time had passed Nan had perked up remarkably. We left unsure if we would have the opportunity to see her again, as her Doctors were saying she could pass at any time. The transformation we saw that afternoon though, was simply amazing.
That very night, my Aunt and Uncle arrived to spend some time with her. Five days later, my daughter and I visited my Nan once more, I was totally unprepared for what lay ahead of me. I had no idea this was even possible, I had hoped that such change could happen, but until that point hope was all I had. My daughter and I walked in the door to see my old Nan, the one I had seen 6 months before, out of bed laughing, joking and sharing a cup of tea. I could not believe my eyes, I did not believe that this was the same woman I had seen only 5 days prior, how could such a transformation be?
Quite simply, this transformation came about from positive energy, love and compassion. That’s it, a change in my Grandmothers day to day life, had prompted the biggest change in her outlook, and suddenly she was happy again. What I really wasn’t prepared for, was how much this could transpire into a physical change. Now don’t get me wrong, my Nan is still in heart failure, and she could still pass at any moment, her end of life is near, but now she is enjoying her time, she is out of bed, can move with assistance, rather than being bed bound, she is out of pain and most of all she is happy.
I share this story with you today, because it is one of those light bulb moments in my life, I have been shown how important a positive environment is, how much this can change the lives of those that live in it. I hope that this story will give you some hope for those times when life is tough, and that maybe you can then share this story with others in their tough times. Positive energy is the most powerful thing I have ever witnessed, imagine what we could do if we all lived with a positive outlook every day. Wouldn’t the world really be a better place then!
