We have entertained quite a lot over the last few weeks, friends, family and clients, have shared meals, drink and nibbles, and time by the fire with us. We have really enjoyed the way our home takes on a new life when visitors come, and this has made us think about how we change our space prior to visitors arriving. Until this week, we have mostly entertained outside on the back deck, recently the fire pit in the yard become another place to entertain. With the arrival of the cooler weather, we have moved our entertaining into the dining room.
Our daily meals are also taken in the dining room, it is a simple space then, without frills or fuss, perfect for 5 children to sit and enjoy their meal, with the arrival of visitors, the room takes on a whole new experience. For example, the lamps are used for subtle lighting, candles are lit for ambience, soft music trickles through from the kitchen to the dining room, the table is laid and share platters are always used. It is a warm and inviting space, where our usual functional, simple space used to be.
Have a look at these spaces from Pinterest for an idea on how our space changes,
When we are eating on a daily basis, we use simple placemats, however when we are entertaining, we always dress the table. White tablecloth, linen napkins and decorations based on the celebration. I’ve used hessian many time, to bring an earthy feel to the table.
I like to use a suggestion on the tastes to come, for example here The Pretty Blog has used Rosemary, inviting to all the senses.
All our meals start with nibbles on the deck.
Before moving inside to share and enjoy great company, good food and maybe a little wine.
Finally, when entertaining, we always use share platters. As often our guests are new to each other, I feel share platters encourage discussion and work to quickly help everyone become comfortable.
Do you entertain often? How does you’re home change when your entertaining?

You are to kind Sam!
I don’t entertain often, but I think I’m going to start!
It’s so much fun!
We enjoy entertaining but haven’t really done a lot of it since having Phoebe. I love the hessian idea. Such an easy and inexpensive way to dress a table.
It is hard to entertain with young kids, it took us years to get back into entertaining. ?
