This week our reader had two questions to be answered by Adam. Both had simple answers for someone in the know, however when you are not sure, as most of us are not, it is always best to consult a professional.
Q. Can I install an exhaust fan in a steel framed home?
The answer to your question about the exhaust fan is YES! You can most definitely install an exhaust fan in a steel framed home. As the exhaust fan is secured to the ceiling sheeting and not any steel framing, it is an easy installation for any licensed Electrician.
Q. If I wanted to install a shelf above a fireplace to house electronic goods, do I need to insulate more carefully?
With the electronics shelf above the fireplace, I would need more information about what type of fireplace it is. Eg. Is it an open fireplace, a gas fireplace or a slow combustion wood burner?
Most electronics have rules and regulations about how far they can be located in relation to a heat source. This depends on the manufacturer. I would advise to check with them as to their rules about this. Generally speaking, you can do the shelf, it depends on the material between the electronics and the heat source. Additionally, the manufacturer of the fireplace will have literature on the clearance of electronics and combustible materials located around the fireplace.
Do you have a questions for our Builder, Electrician, Interior Designer or Plumber? Please leave a comment here or on Facebook if you do.
