Instagram is my most favourite social media platform. I have made many friends through sharing our home and our lives. More than this, I have found so many businesses I might not have known of otherwise. This week in our Small Business Spotlight**, I am sharing one of these businesses found on Instagram. Scouted Design caught my eye immediately. The businesses founder, Sarah is a talented interior stylist who has brought her gorgeous style to her super cool ‘shop’. I think you’ll love this one.
Please introduce yourself and your business?
Hello I’m Sarah, Owner of Scouted Design, a Homewares Boutique and online store based out of a renovated 1969 Vintage caravan. When I’m not scouting gorgeous wares to showcase in my store I’m also a mum to three sons aged 14, 11 and 7 and I currently live in Brisbane.
How did your business begin?
Scouted Design evolved from a love of seeking out beautiful interior decor and cool wares. I’ve always had a passion for interior decorating and styling and once all my children were at school I decided to follow my dreams and create my own business. The pop up store and online boutique seemed like a perfect way to pursue my passion whilst still being available to my boys and all the other things that come with being a Mum.
I found Alice (my little caravan) in October 2015 on Gumtree. She was in need of quite a bit of TLC so I spent every spare minute I had working on her with the goal of transforming her into a little travelling store. It took about five months to complete the renovation but I enjoyed the whole process so much that at one stage I thought I might just continue renovating vintage caravans.
What obstacles did you face and how did you overcome them?
Gosh where to start, there’s been a huge number of obstacles I’ve had to overcome, from learning new renovating skills to creating a website and pitching my idea to stockists. It’s been a huge learning curve. Running your own business and being your own boss takes a lot of motivation and continued work and I couldn’t do it without a lot of personal persistence as well as the support of my husband and family.
Tell us a little more about the product or services you provide?
I believe in surrounding yourself with things you love, collaborating with local designers and supporting ethically made products. My little vintage caravan is filled to the brim with a gorgeous collection of homewares, interior decor and lifestyle products from my favourite Australian and international designers. From Cushions and scented candles to kitchenware, Table decor, Wall art, Throws, Garlands and more I have a beautiful range of contemporary Australian and Scandinavian inspired wares.
Where would you like to see your business in 5 years?
To be honest I’m still working that out. Scouted design is such a new business and has so much potential to grow and expand in a variety of ways. I’m currently working towards new Pop up shop locations and continuing to grow my product lines. I’ve also been approached to take on some interior styling jobs so that would be an amazing avenue to grow too.
Scouted Design will be popping up at Hawkes and Crosby Cafe, 1/540 Mt crosby Rd Anstead from Sunday 5th February, and will return on the 3rd and 1st Sunday of each month. Plus our online store is always open.
How cool is this business! Would you like a little caravan? Did you holiday in a caravan as a kid?
